Penang Hadhrami Arab wedding

The Hadhrami Arabs , a minority community in Penang, normally adopts the local Malay custom in their day to day affairs. Weddings are held according to Malay/Muslim custom since most of them have been fully integrated with the Malay community.

However, when Najeeb bin Ali Almurtadza Al-Tahir weds Naemah binti Shaikh Alhabshee on May 31, it was a mix of Hadhrami and Malay cultures.

The night was filled with Hadhrami music and the men danced the "samra" and "zafin" in the compound of the bride's family home while the ladies in the house.

Baguih la cam tu Pak Syed ... Kekalkan budaya suku bangsa sendiri. Kalau tidak, habis lenyap dimamah zaman. Teringin juga nak dengar macamana muzik Hadhrami ni. By the way, is there a relation between Hadhrami and Hadhramaut? Pardon my ignorance.

Daun Karapulea,
