Penang Times Square replaces another heritage

Birch House - one of Penang's heritage
Penang's foremost tin smelting plant, the Eastern Smelting Company, located at the Datuk Keramat Road, is gone for good.

Eastern Smelting Company was the then Malaya's largest and longest-running smelting plant. It was closed down in 1998 due to a shortage of tin ore. The plant was torn down to pave the way for Penang's latest attraction, if one can say so, Penang Times Square, more or less similar to Kuala Lumpur's Berjaya Times Square, which is under construction (Penang Times Square, that is).

The only building spared is Birch House.
